Self-Soothing and Grounding: Practical Tools for Healing

When trauma or stress feels overwhelming, it’s important to call on your protector or nurturing part of self. These practices can help you return to safety, calm, and presence.

Breathe and Be Mindful

  • Focus on your breath—slow inhales, longer exhales.
  • Practice mindfulness by noticing sensations, sounds, and sights in the present moment.
  • Use dual awareness to remind yourself that intrusive thoughts are from the past, not the present.

Soothe Your Body and Senses

  • Practice progressive relaxation, releasing tension in each muscle group.
  • Try a butterfly hug while imagining a safe or happy memory.
  • Light incense or use essential oils (peppermint, lavender).
  • Wrap yourself in a blanket for comfort and grounding.

Engage in Pleasure and Creativity

  • Bake cookies or something simple—enjoy it or share it.
  • Cook yourself a beautiful dinner.
  • Colour, paint, or create a vision board.
  • Play with textures, colours, or art supplies to bring joy back into the present.

Connect with Others

  • Spend time with a friend or loved one.
  • Volunteer to help someone in your community.
  • Be with a pet—walk a dog, cuddle a cat, or volunteer at an animal shelter.
  • Pray or connect to your spirituality for strength.

Focus on Mastery and Goals

  • Choose one small thing you can accomplish today.
  • Celebrate your success with a reward.
  • Keep your goals in mind—each step builds confidence.

Ground Yourself in the Present

  • Try grounding exercises like the 5-4-3-2-1 method: notice 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.
  • Sit in a community garden or walk in nature to reconnect with the earth.
  • Use Rescue Remedy or keep a white flower nearby as a calming visual anchor.
